In a major move to curb rising air pollution levels, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has ordered the immediate closure of 16 industrial units across the National Capital Region (NCR) after inspections revealed serious violations of environmental regulations.
The action was taken as part of CAQM’s ongoing efforts to ensure strict compliance with pollution control laws and improve air quality in the region.
Units across three NCR states affected
According to CAQM officials, the defaulting units were spread across multiple states in the NCR:
●1 unit in Uttar Pradesh (NCR region)
●1 unit in Rajasthan (NCR region)
●14 units in Haryana’s Sonipat district
All units have been directed to cease operations with immediate effect.
Serious violations found during inspections
CAQM stated that inspections uncovered several critical lapses, including:
●Operation without mandatory approvals such as Consent to ●Establish (CTE) and Consent to Operate (CTO)
●Absence or malfunctioning of air pollution control devices
●Use of unauthorised and polluting fuels
●Continued industrial activity during GRAP restriction periods
●Diesel generator sets not meeting prescribed emission standards
In several cases, inspectors observed visible emissions of smoke and pollutants, indicating direct violations of environmental norms.
Operations to remain suspended
The Commission has made it clear that the affected units will not be allowed to resume operations until they fully comply with all legal and environmental requirements. Only after rectifying deficiencies and receiving fresh approvals will reopening be considered.
Zero tolerance for non-compliance
CAQM has issued a strong warning that non-compliance with pollution control norms will not be tolerated. The Commission said similar enforcement actions, including closures and legal proceedings, will continue against violators across the NCR.

Appeal to industries
The Commission urged all industries operating in NCR to:
Strictly follow environmental regulations
Install and maintain pollution control equipment
Ensure continuous compliance during all operational hours
Adhere to restrictions imposed under Graded Response
Action Plan (GRAP)
Part of larger air quality strategy
Officials said the action is part of a broader strategy to tackle air pollution through monitoring, enforcement, and accountability. With NCR facing recurring air quality challenges, CAQM emphasised that cooperation from industries is essential to achieve lasting improvement.
The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to protecting public health and improving air quality across the NCR region.
