To ease traffic congestion and improve connectivity in Gurgaon, authorities have announced plans to construct a 4.2-kilometre elevated corridor along the Southern Peripheral Road between Vatika Chowk and NH8.
The project, estimated to cost Rs 755 crore, is aimed at transforming the busy stretch into a signal-free corridor, allowing smoother traffic movement across one of the city’s fastest-growing areas.
GMDA Invites Bids for Construction
The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority has invited requests for proposals (RFP) from construction agencies to build the elevated corridor. Once the contract is awarded, the project is expected to take around 30 months to complete.
Officials said the selected contractor will not only construct the corridor but will also operate and maintain it for 10 years after completion.
Eight-Lane Elevated Road Planned
Under the proposed design, the project will include:
●Eight-lane elevated corridor between Vatika Chowk and NH8
●Six-lane surface road beneath the elevated structure
●Two-lane service roads on both sides
●Ramps and loops at major intersections for smoother entry and exit
An interchange at NH8 will also be built to ensure seamless connectivity with the national highway.
Faster Connectivity Across Key Expressways
Officials said the new corridor will significantly improve connectivity between major roads such as:
●Dwarka Expressway
●Delhi-Mumbai Expressway
●Golf Course Extension Road
●Sohna Road
Authorities believe the project will help reduce congestion at major junctions such as Vatika Chowk and Subhash Chowk.
Rapid Urban Growth Behind Infrastructure Push
According to PC Meena, the corridor is part of the city’s broader plan to strengthen road infrastructure in response to Gurgaon’s rapid urban expansion.
He said the development of high-capacity road networks is essential to support increasing traffic and sustain economic growth in the region.
The corridor will also benefit residents living in newly developing residential and commercial sectors located along the SPR stretch.
Phase II to Include Vatika Chowk Interchange
Officials said another interchange at Vatika Chowk will be constructed in Phase II of the project. This will further strengthen connectivity between SPR and the Sohna elevated corridor, improving traffic flow toward southern Gurgaon.
Utility Shifting Before Construction
Before construction begins, authorities will have to relocate several utilities along the route, including high-tension power lines and underground gas pipelines. Around ₹40 crore has been allocated for this work.
Officials said most of the right-of-way (ROW) is already clear and there are minimal trees along the stretch, which should help speed up the construction process.

Residents Seek Proper Traffic Management
While residents welcomed the project, they stressed the need for effective traffic management during construction.
Many commuters rely on the Southern Peripheral Road daily, especially after the opening of Dwarka Expressway increased traffic volumes in the area.
Residents say authorities must ensure that construction activities do not create major traffic bottlenecks during the development phase.
