The Man Behind the Legacy: James Thomason
James Thomason, a British administrator, founded Roorkee College in 1847 to train civil engineers for the Upper Ganges Canal project.
In 1854, it was renamed Thomason College of Civil Engineering to honor his contribution.
It became University of Roorkee in 1949, the first engineering university in independent India.
Finally, in 2001, it earned the prestigious IIT status, joining the elite Indian Institutes of Technology group.
