In a world where caffeine fixes and sugar cravings are considered routine coping mechanisms for fatigue, one American cardiologist is challenging the norm—urging millions to recognize these everyday habits as potential signs of deeper metabolic imbalance.

Dr. Sanjay Bhojraj, a U.S.-based cardiologist and wellness advocate, recently took to social media to share a growing concern among physicians: the increasing number of patients reporting energy crashes, irritability, bloating, and an overreliance on coffee or sugary snacks to power through the day. These aren’t just lifestyle quirks, he warns—they could be your metabolism sounding an alarm.

“Your metabolism is waving a red flag—and you’ve been trained to ignore it,” Dr. Bhojraj wrote in a widely circulated Instagram post, drawing attention to the silent stress response many individuals are trapped in.

A Cycle of Sugar Spikes and Crashes

According to Dr. Bhojraj, recurring fatigue and cravings are often rooted in unstable blood sugar levels, which place the body on a hormonal roller coaster. This pattern, if left unchecked, can fuel chronic inflammation, increase the risk of lifestyle diseases, and worsen mental and emotional well-being.

The problem, he explains, is not just what people eat—but how their metabolic system responds to dietary and environmental stressors. “Mood swings, exhaustion, bloating—these aren’t random. They are biochemical responses to imbalance,” he said.

More Than Just a Coffee Habit

What may feel like a harmless third espresso or a quick sugar fix might be concealing an overburdened system, Dr. Bhojraj says. Often, people turn to short-term stimulants to push through the day, overlooking the body’s pleas for rest, recovery, or better nourishment.

“These daily choices accumulate,” he notes. “We mask the signals instead of treating the source.”

Medications, he says, may relieve symptoms temporarily, but without addressing the underlying metabolic strain, the fatigue-craving cycle continues. The solution lies in addressing root causes—through lifestyle changes, not just pills.

A Metabolic Reset: What Experts Recommend

To restore balance and build resilience, Dr. Bhojraj recommends a comprehensive lifestyle approach:

  • Prioritize restorative sleep to regulate hormones and energy
  • Minimize processed sugars and focus on nutrient-dense, whole foods
  • Incorporate regular movement to stabilize glucose levels and mood
  • Manage stress through mindfulness, breathwork, or breaks in screen time

While occasional cravings are natural, persistent dependence on stimulants and sweets—especially when coupled with chronic fatigue—may require deeper intervention. He encourages individuals to seek medical advice if symptoms persist despite lifestyle changes.

A Warning Worth Listening To

In an age where hustle is glorified and fatigue is normalized, Dr. Bhojraj’s message is a reminder to slow down—and tune in.

“We’ve normalized feeling tired all the time,” he wrote. “But when your body speaks, listen. It’s not just tired. It’s trying to tell you something.”
