An AIIMS-trained gastroenterologist has outlined four science-backed dietary and lifestyle measures to boost gut health, including the use of everyday Indian staples such as idli and dahi. The recommendations, focused on prebiotics, probiotics, fiber, and hydration, highlight how simple, accessible choices can improve digestion and long-term wellness.

Gut Health Beyond Digestion

Gut health is increasingly seen as central to overall well-being, influencing not only digestion but also immunity, energy, and disease prevention. Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a gastroenterologist trained at AIIMS, Harvard, and Stanford, shared practical strategies on social media to help people strengthen their gut microbiome. He emphasized that small, consistent changes in diet and lifestyle can deliver lasting benefits.

The Four Recommendations

1. Add Prebiotics to the Diet
Garlic, onions, asparagus, and bananas are excellent prebiotic foods that feed beneficial gut bacteria. By supporting microbial diversity, they promote better digestion and protection against harmful pathogens.

2. Incorporate Probiotic Foods
Fermented foods like dahi (yogurt), idli, kefir, kimchi, and kombucha provide live beneficial bacteria that restore gut balance. Dr. Sethi highlighted Indian staples such as idli and dahi as easily available, cost-effective options.

3. Increase Fiber Intake
High-fiber foods such as chia seeds, berries, and oatmeal improve bowel regularity, reduce acid reflux, and prevent bloating. Experts recommend a daily intake of at least 30 grams of fiber.

4. Stay Properly Hydrated
Adequate hydration—about 8 glasses of water daily—is essential to help dietary fiber function effectively. Water also aids in digestion and prevents constipation.

A Holistic Approach

According to Dr. Sethi, gut health is more than dietary fixes; it represents a holistic balance of nutrition, hydration, and lifestyle. With India’s traditional food culture already rich in fermented and fiber-based foods, these simple practices can be adopted widely to improve health without costly interventions.

From idli to garlic, everyday foods offer powerful solutions for gut health. Dr. Sethi’s advice reinforces how returning to simple, traditional, and balanced habits can transform digestion and overall well-being.
