India’s clean energy technology sector is emerging as a major employment hub, with hiring increasing sharply over the past two years. According to a report by HR solutions company CIEL HR, recruitment in the cleantech sector has grown by about 56.6% during this period, reflecting the rapid expansion of renewable energy and sustainable technologies across the country.
The report highlights that Delhi-NCR has emerged as the leading hiring hub, accounting for the highest share of job opportunities in the industry.

Delhi-NCR Leads in Clean Energy Hiring
Based on workforce data analysis from 55 cleantech companies, the report found that Delhi-NCR accounts for nearly 44% of all job openings in the sector.
Other cities also contribute to hiring, but at a much smaller scale:
Mumbai: around 9% of job openings
Bengaluru: approximately 6%
Pune: about 5%
Meanwhile, Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities are also gaining momentum, collectively accounting for nearly 30% of hiring, indicating the sector’s growing geographic spread.

Demand Rising for Technical and Engineering Roles
The report shows that several technical roles are witnessing increased demand in the cleantech industry, including:
●Design Engineers
●Process Engineers
●Production Engineers
●Operations Managers
●Maintenance Managers
Experts say the growth in hiring is largely driven by government policies promoting renewable energy, increasing investment in green technology, and India’s transition towards sustainable energy solutions.

Skill Gap Remains a Major Challenge
Despite strong hiring growth, the sector continues to face a shortage of skilled professionals.
India produces more than one million engineering graduates each year, but many lack specialised skills required for the clean energy sector, such as:
●Renewable energy systems
●Energy storage technologies
●Grid integration and smart energy management
Companies are therefore shifting towards planned, skill-based hiring rather than rapid recruitment.

Gender Imbalance in the Sector
The report also highlights a significant gender imbalance within the industry.
Women currently represent only around 11% of the total workforce in the cleantech sector. However, their representation rises slightly in leadership roles, where women account for about 15%.
Industry experts believe that increasing women’s participation could further strengthen the sector’s growth.

Cleantech Sector Seen as Future Growth Engine
Aditya Narayan Mishra, Managing Director and CEO of CIEL HR, said that India’s cleantech sector is at a critical turning point and could become a major driver of economic growth in the coming years.
He emphasised that companies must focus on skill development, leadership building and inclusive workplace culture to fully unlock the sector’s potential.
With the government pushing for renewable energy expansion and sustainability goals, the clean energy industry is expected to create thousands of new jobs in the coming years, making it one of the fastest-growing employment sectors in India.
