Industrialist and philanthropist Anand Mahindra has sparked an important conversation — one that transcends boardrooms and classrooms. In a recent statement, the Mahindra Group Chairman advised that even engineers and MBA graduates must study art and culture to become well-rounded leaders capable of navigating complex real-world challenges.

Art and Culture: A Leadership Essential, Not an Optional Hobby

Mahindra emphasized that while technical education teaches logic and analytics, it is art, literature, music, and cultural exploration that hone creativity, empathy, and deeper insight — qualities essential for modern leadership.

“You learn how to think critically and see patterns others might miss when you immerse yourself in the arts,” Mahindra said.

He believes that culture builds emotional intelligence, which is increasingly important in a world shaped by AI, automation, and digital fatigue.

The Future Belongs to Holistic Thinkers

According to Mahindra, the most impactful leaders of tomorrow will be those who combine technical expertise with a human touch — who understand history, expression, and social context as much as they do spreadsheets or code.

He encouraged India’s youth, especially those in STEM and management fields, to read widely, visit galleries, explore heritage, and engage in artistic pursuits as part of lifelong learning.
