A heartbreaking incident has emerged from Greater Noida, where a five-year-old boy lost his life after slipping into a water-filled pit near his home in Preet Vihar Colony.
According to police, the child, identified as Dev, had returned from school around 1 pm and stepped out to play. Within minutes, tragedy struck when he accidentally slipped into a nearby pit filled with wastewater.
Rescue Efforts Failed to Save the Child
The incident occurred around 1:30 pm at a short distance from his residence. The pit, reportedly located on farmland where wastewater from the colony collects, proved fatal.
Locals and passersby quickly rushed to the spot and managed to pull the child out. He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital, but doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Family members said the child could not escape the pit due to its depth and lack of safety measures.
No Complaint Filed Yet
Police officials confirmed that the land belongs to a local farmer where wastewater accumulation had created a hazardous pit.
As of now, no formal complaint has been filed by the family, but authorities are looking into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Series of Similar Incidents Raise Serious Concerns
This is not an isolated tragedy. The region has witnessed multiple such incidents in recent months:
●In February, a four-year-old boy drowned in a canal in Dankaur
●In January, a software engineer died after his car fell into an unguarded construction pit
A survey had also revealed several dangerous open pits and excavations across Noida and Greater Noida, many without basic safety measures like barricades, warning signs, or railings.
Lack of Safety Measures Under Scanner
The incident has once again raised serious questions about civic safety and negligence.
Experts point out that:
●Open pits filled with wastewater are death traps, especially for children
●Lack of fencing, signage, or barricading makes such areas extremely dangerous
●Rapid urbanisation without safety compliance is putting lives at risk

Urgent Need for Accountability
Residents have demanded immediate action from authorities to:
●Identify and cover hazardous pits
●Ensure proper drainage systems
●Install warning signs and barricades
The tragedy highlights the urgent need for stricter monitoring and accountability to prevent such avoidable deaths.
