The long-neglected districts of eastern Uttar Pradesh are set to witness a major development push in the New Year, with a new Greenfield Expressway connecting Ghazipur to Ballia and extending up to Bihar. The ambitious infrastructure project is expected to significantly improve connectivity, generate employment, and accelerate economic growth across Purvanchal and adjoining regions of Bihar.
The proposed expressway will directly link eastern UP districts to the Purvanchal Expressway, creating a seamless high-speed corridor between Ghazipur, Ballia, Chhapra, Buxar and Patna. For residents of these historically underdeveloped regions, the project is being seen as a long-awaited gateway to progress.
Rs 5,320-Crore Project to Boost Regional Economy
The expressway project will begin near Hridaypur village on NH-29, cross the Chhapra–Manjhi NH-19, and terminate at the new Revelganj Bypass in Bihar. With a total length of 134.3 km and an estimated cost of Rs 5,320 crore, the project is expected to be completed by the end of 2025, according to Project Director S.K. Pathak.
Officials believe the expressway will not only enhance mobility but also open up new avenues for trade, logistics, and industrial development, strengthening the role of eastern India in the national economy.
Clean Drinking Water for Over 4.37 Lakh Families
Alongside road infrastructure, the district will also see major progress under the Jal Jeevan Mission. A total of 4.37 lakh households in Ballia will receive clean drinking water through the Har Ghar Jal Yojana, backed by an investment of Rs 3,335 crore.
Three water treatment plants are being developed to supply treated water from the Ganga and Sarayu rivers. These plants, located in Belhari, Hanumanganj, and Maniyar, will collectively treat 449 million litres of water per day. Pipeline installation work is currently underway across villages.

Healthcare Infrastructure to Get a Boost
Healthcare services in Ballia are also expected to improve in 2025, with two 100-bed government hospitals set to become operational. One facility in Sonbarsa (Bairia) has already been constructed, while another at Jayaprakash Nagar CHC has been upgraded.
According to Chief Medical Officer Dr. Sanjeev Verman, both hospitals will start functioning at full capacity in the New Year, ensuring better medical access for rural populations.
New Year, New Opportunities for Eastern UP
With large-scale investments in roads, water supply, and healthcare, Ballia and neighbouring districts are preparing for a transformative year ahead. The Greenfield Expressway, in particular, is being viewed as a game-changer that could redefine the development narrative of eastern Uttar Pradesh and strengthen its integration with Bihar and the rest of India.
