In a major stride toward strengthening India’s artificial intelligence ecosystem, AI4Bharat has unveiled the Indic LLM-Arena, a first-of-its-kind open benchmarking platform designed to evaluate large language models (LLMs) specifically for Indian languages and use cases.
The initiative aims to empower startups, researchers, and enterprises by offering a transparent, data-driven comparison of AI models. Through this platform, organisations can make informed choices about which LLM best fits their language and business needs — reducing risks and speeding up deployment of India-focused AI solutions.
A Fair Arena for Indian Language AI Models
AI4Bharat said the Indic LLM-Arena takes inspiration from leading global platforms like lmarena, but is purpose-built for India’s multilingual environment. What sets it apart is its fair, blind, and side-by-side evaluation process.
Here’s how it works:
Users input a prompt in any Indian language or a mix of languages.
The system then displays two anonymous AI-generated responses (Model A and Model B).
Users vote for the better response or mark it as a tie, without knowing which AI model produced it.
After thousands of such votes, AI4Bharat uses the Bradley-Terry statistical model to rank the competing LLMs based on real-world Indian use cases.
By hiding model identities, the platform eliminates provider bias, ensuring a level playing field where only performance matters.

Building the Future of Indic AI
AI4Bharat envisions the Indic LLM-Arena as more than just a ranking board — it’s a community-driven benchmarking ecosystem. The organisation said it plans to release updated leaderboards in the coming months, refining model rankings after removing statistical uncertainties.
Additionally, it is exploring granular leaderboards that assess models by specific languages, domains, and tasks — from customer support and education to government services and translation.
This initiative could serve as a vital infrastructure layer for India’s AI revolution, helping developers and businesses alike identify the most efficient tools for serving a linguistically diverse population.
A Step Towards AI Independence
As India continues to push for digital sovereignty and innovation in native languages, the Indic LLM-Arena represents a crucial move toward AI models that understand, think, and respond in Indian contexts.
By combining fairness, transparency, and open access, AI4Bharat is not just building benchmarks — it’s building the foundation for a truly Indic AI ecosystem.
