In a remarkable medical breakthrough, MGM Healthcare, Chennai, has successfully performed a complex and rare robotic surgery on a 52-year-old woman suffering from a debilitating nerve disorder—Bilateral Glossopharyngeal Neuralgia—a condition that causes intense throat and neck pain, severely affecting swallowing and daily life.

A Year of Misery Ends with a Miracle Procedure

The patient had endured over a year of excruciating discomfort, unable to eat or swallow without severe pain. Her condition was further complicated by Eagle’s Syndrome, where abnormally elongated neck bones press against critical nerves, causing chronic, medication-resistant pain.

Despite visiting several hospitals and undergoing various treatments, the true cause of her suffering remained undiagnosed—until specialists at MGM Healthcare identified the rare combination of disorders.

India’s First-of-its-Kind Robotic Intervention

In a pioneering move, the surgical team opted for Transoral Robotic Surgery (TORS)—a minimally invasive, robotic-assisted procedure performed entirely through the mouth. This technique avoided any external cuts, reduced trauma to surrounding tissues, and ensured a faster, smoother recovery for the patient.

According to MGM Healthcare, this successful intervention highlights the potential of robotic technology in treating rare and complex nerve disorders, offering hope to patients who have exhausted traditional medical options.
