A key infrastructure project aimed at reducing traffic congestion in Greater Noida is progressing steadily, with the Gaur Chowk underpass now 65% complete, officials said.
The 700-metre-long underpass, being constructed parallel to the Taj Highway, is expected to open by June, potentially easing one of the busiest traffic bottlenecks in Greater Noida West.
According to officials from the Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority (GNIDA), the project is progressing on schedule and is likely to be operational before the onset of the monsoon.
Rs 92 Crore Six-Lane Underpass
GNIDA CEO Sumit Yadav said the underpass project, estimated to cost ₹92 crore, will significantly improve traffic flow in the region.
“The slab of the underpass was completed in September last year, allowing unrestricted traffic movement from Parthala Chowk to Gaur Chowk and further toward Ek Murti Chowk. We aim to finish the remaining work within the next three to four months,” Yadav said.
Once operational, the six-lane underpass will enable vehicles travelling from Surajpur to bypass the heavy congestion at Gaur Chowk and directly connect Greater Noida with Gaur City and the Delhi–Meerut Expressway corridor.
One of the Busiest Intersections in NCR
Gaur Chowk is one of the busiest traffic junctions in the region where traffic from multiple directions converges, including:
●Noida
●Surajpur
●Crossings Republik
●Delhi–Meerut Expressway
Due to the convergence of these routes, the intersection frequently experiences severe traffic jams, particularly during peak office hours.
Commuters often face long queues extending up to the Parthala flyover.
Ongoing Construction Causing Temporary Congestion
While the project promises long-term relief, ongoing construction has temporarily worsened traffic conditions in the area.
Traffic has been diverted from the main carriageway to service lanes along the Taj Highway, creating bottlenecks during rush hours.
Residents say navigating the intersection has become difficult due to narrowed lanes and roadside encroachments.
Rakesh Kumar, a commuter, said it can take nearly 30 minutes to cross the junction during peak hours.
Another commuter, Amit Kumar from Noida Sector 121, said even two-wheelers struggle to move through the congested stretch.
Project Started in 2024
Construction of the underpass began in June 2024 with an initial completion timeline of 18 months.
Officials believe that once completed, the project will significantly reduce traffic snarls at Gaur Chowk and improve connectivity between Noida and Greater Noida West.
