India’s fight against cyber crime received a significant boost with the launch of the Certified Cyber Crime Investigator Course by the Centre for Police Technology (CPT). The national-level training programme aims to equip police and security agencies with advanced skills required to investigate modern cyber crimes and present legally sustainable, court-ready digital evidence.
With cyber offences expanding beyond online fraud into complex areas such as encrypted communications, cryptocurrency misuse, ransomware attacks, deepfake content, and dark web activities, law enforcement agencies have been under growing pressure to upgrade their investigative capabilities. The newly launched CPT course has been designed specifically to address these evolving challenges.
Designed for police and security agencies
The Certified Cyber Crime Investigator Course has been developed for personnel from Police Forces, Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs), Paramilitary Units, and Defence Forces. Officials of all ranks — from constables and sub-inspectors to senior officers including DSPs and IPS officers — are eligible to participate. The programme focuses on practical investigation skills rather than theoretical learning alone.
According to CPT, the objective is to create a standardised cyber crime investigation framework across India, ensuring that digital evidence collected during investigations stands strong during judicial scrutiny.
Focus on court-admissible digital evidence
One of the key strengths of the course lies in its emphasis on chain of custody, evidence handling, forensic documentation, and legally admissible reporting. Investigators are trained to ensure that digital artefacts such as mobile data, server logs, CCTV footage, and financial trails are preserved and analysed in a manner acceptable to courts.
Experts believe this approach addresses a critical gap, as many cyber crime cases fail not due to lack of evidence but because of procedural lapses in handling digital proof.
Advanced and practical training modules
The course covers over 40 advanced domains in cyber forensics and digital investigation. These include disk and memory forensics, mobile phone analysis for Android and iOS devices, social media and open-source intelligence (OSINT), dark web investigations, financial cyber crime analysis, ransomware and malware forensics, cloud platform investigations, and emerging areas such as blockchain and AI-driven crime detection.
Training is conducted in a hands-on format, enabling participants to work on simulated and real-life case scenarios, helping them apply learning directly in the field.

Industry expertise strengthens the programme
The course is supported by Algoritha Security Pvt Ltd, a leading Indian digital forensics and incident response company, as the Knowledge Partner. Algoritha’s experience in handling complex cyber crime cases, ransomware incidents, and forensic lab operations has contributed to making the programme operationally relevant and field-oriented.
Officials stated that the involvement of industry experts ensures that investigators remain updated with real-world cyber crime trends rather than outdated threat models.
A step toward future-ready cyber policing
As India’s digital footprint continues to grow, cyber crime is expected to rise in both volume and sophistication. CPT officials believe that building technical capacity within law enforcement is essential to protect citizens, businesses, and national infrastructure.
The Certified Cyber Crime Investigator Course is being viewed as a strategic investment in cyber justice, strengthening trust in digital policing and improving conviction outcomes.
Registrations for the course are currently open, with strong interest being shown from police units and security agencies across the country
