The Delhi government is set to promote khadi products in city schools while unveiling a new skill development scheme aimed at benefiting over 16,000 artisans across the capital.
The initiative seeks to familiarise students with khadi’s cultural legacy, economic value and environmental relevance, while simultaneously strengthening livelihoods in the khadi and village industries sector.

Khadi Awareness Drive in Schools
Under the proposed plan, schools will not host permanent khadi outlets but will organise exhibitions, workshops and awareness sessions to introduce students to the fabric’s historic role in India’s freedom movement and its importance in sustainable fashion.
Officials said the move aligns with broader efforts to promote indigenous products and highlight khadi as an eco-friendly, hand-spun and handwoven textile that supports rural livelihoods.
Students will be educated about the environmental benefits of khadi and its contribution to self-reliance and local employment.

Delhi Khadi Kaushal Vikas Yojana Announced
Alongside the school initiative, the government has launched the Delhi Khadi Kaushal Vikas Yojana, a scheme designed to empower more than 16,000 artisans and their families.
The programme will offer structured skill training, financial support, daily stipends of ₹400, free tool kits and food during training sessions. It will also provide digital market access through an e-catalogue platform to enhance visibility and sales opportunities.
The scheme will be implemented over 2025–26 and 2026–27 and will cover multiple trades, including tailoring, pattern-making, fashion production, documentation, merchandising and IT support roles.

Focus on Self-Reliance & Sustainable Income
Authorities said the initiative aims to ensure long-term income stability, dignity and entrepreneurship opportunities for artisans. Only residents who have lived in Delhi for at least five years will be eligible.
By combining education, skill development and digital outreach, the government hopes to create a sustainable ecosystem that connects young consumers with traditional craftsmanship while generating economic security for thousands of families.
The twin push reflects a broader strategy to revive khadi’s presence in urban markets while nurturing the next generation’s awareness of indigenous industries.
