Delhi Roads Go Smart: QR Codes on Signboards to Offer Instant Information

Delhi’s road infrastructure is set to become smarter, more transparent and citizen-friendly as the Public Works Department (PWD) rolls out QR-code-enabled road signboards across the capital. Under the new initiative, every existing and newly installed road signboard will feature a QR code, allowing people to instantly access detailed information by scanning it with their mobile phones.
The move is aimed at modernising road signage while encouraging greater public participation in road safety and maintenance.

QR codes to be mandatory on all signboards
PWD has issued formal instructions making QR codes mandatory on all road signboards. Officials said the objective is to ensure better monitoring, easier maintenance and improved accountability of agencies responsible for road infrastructure.

With this system, road signboards will no longer be limited to showing directions or warnings. Instead, they will act as digital information points connected directly to the department’s records.

What information will be available
Once a QR code is scanned, citizens will be able to view key details related to the signboard, including:
●Date of installation
●Warranty period
●Maintenance and service records
In the next phase, the same platform will allow users to register complaints about damaged, missing or unclear signboards, making it easier for authorities to respond quickly.

Focus on transparency and safety
Officials believe the initiative will bring greater transparency to road maintenance operations. With real-time access to information, delays in repairs can be reduced, helping prevent accidents caused by broken or poorly visible signboards.
The system will also help fix responsibility, ensuring that agencies involved in installation and maintenance remain accountable.

Citizen participation strengthened
PWD officials said the QR-based system will empower citizens by giving them a direct channel to report issues and provide feedback. Instead of relying on traditional complaint mechanisms, residents can now flag problems instantly using their smartphones.

This approach is expected to improve coordination between citizens and authorities and provide ground-level inputs for better road management.

Step towards smart and safer roads
The initiative aligns with Delhi’s broader push towards smart city solutions and digital governance. By integrating technology into everyday infrastructure, the government aims to improve road safety, enhance transparency and build public trust.

Officials said preparations are underway to ensure smooth implementation across the city. Once fully rolled out, Delhi’s QR-enabled road signboards are expected to serve as a model for other cities looking to combine technology with urban infrastructure.
