In a groundbreaking move to tackle the capital’s persistent air pollution crisis, Delhi is all set to experience its first-ever artificial rainfall through cloud seeding operations scheduled between July 4 and 11, 2025—weather permitting.
The initiative, titled “Technology Demonstration and Evaluation of Cloud Seeding as an Alternative for Delhi NCR Pollution Mitigation,” is spearheaded by the Delhi Environment Department in collaboration with IIT Kanpur and IMD Pune.
A High-Tech Approach to Pollution Control
The project will include five aircraft sorties, each lasting 90 minutes and covering around 100 sq. km in northwest and outer Delhi. Specially equipped aircraft will release a scientifically formulated seeding mixture into clouds over low-security air zones, with the aim of triggering rainfall to wash out airborne pollutants.

“This marks a historic step in urban pollution control,” said Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa, lauding Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s leadership. He confirmed that flight plans have been submitted to IMD Pune and a proposal has been sent to DGCA for alternate scheduling in case of poor weather conditions.
What’s Next?
While the monsoon is expected to reach Delhi-NCR by early July, the artificial rain plan will act as a backup or booster in case natural rainfall fails to clear the toxic air. If successful, this demonstration could pave the way for regular cloud seeding during high-pollution months in Delhi and other major Indian cities.
