Delhi is set to witness a major shift in urban transport as Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced key policy initiatives aimed at reducing pollution, expanding electric mobility, and improving passenger safety. During a high-level meeting with representatives of cab-based companies, the Chief Minister outlined the government’s roadmap for a people-centric and eco-friendly transport system.

CM Rekha Gupta said the Delhi government is actively working on a public-friendly Electric Vehicle (EV) policy to control pollution and promote sustainable transport. She assured private companies that the government is ready to provide land for setting up charging stations, but made it clear that companies must ensure the use of solar energy at these stations and put in place scientific disposal mechanisms for unusable batteries.

The Chief Minister also said the government will extend relief to vehicle manufacturers, but stressed that manufacturers must pass on benefits to consumers. She urged companies to price electric vehicles in a way that attracts buyers and asked manufacturers to submit clear supply plans to meet the rising demand for EVs.

Shared Taxis and Women-Driven Cabs Coming Soon
In a significant development, representatives of cab aggregator companies agreed to introduce shared taxi services in Delhi. They also committed to launching women-driver taxi services within a month, a move expected to enhance safety and employment opportunities for women.
Cab companies expressed readiness to onboard private EVs and BS-6 vehicles as taxis, provided necessary regulatory changes are made. Responding positively, CM Rekha Gupta assured them that required amendments in rules will be carried out at the earliest.

Focus on Safety, E-Rickshaws and Airport Connectivity
The Chief Minister directed companies to strengthen passenger safety measures and explore the inclusion of e-rickshaws in their service network. She also encouraged them to consider running Ring Road shuttle services and expanding taxi operations from the airport, assuring full government support for these initiatives.
Delhi’s Transport Minister Dr. Pankaj Kumar Singh was also present at the meeting.
With shared mobility, cleaner vehicles, and women-centric services on the horizon, Delhi’s transport ecosystem is poised for a major transformation aimed at sustainability, safety, and convenience.
