In a world full of corporate giants and global tycoons, the story of M. A. Yusuff Ali stands out as a shining example of how humble beginnings can lead to global success. Born in a small village in Kerala, he is today counted among the richest and most influential businessmen in the UAE, with a personal net worth exceeding ₹60,000 crores (USD 6.9 billion).

Known for his humility, generosity, and visionary leadership, Yusuff Ali is the Chairman and Managing Director of LuLu Group International, the force behind the hugely popular LuLu Hypermarket chain and LuLu International Shopping Malls across the globe.

A Humble Beginning in Thrissur

Born on November 15, 1955, in Nattika, Thrissur district of Kerala, Yusuff Ali grew up in a modest household. He completed his schooling from St. Xavier’s High School, Karanchira, and later pursued a diploma in Business Management and Administration. But the real turning point in his life came when he moved to Abu Dhabi in the 1970s.

In the UAE, he joined his paternal uncle M.K. Abdullah, founder of the LuLu Group, and began working in the family’s import and wholesale distribution business. With sheer dedication, business sense, and long-term vision, Yusuff Ali quickly rose through the ranks.

Building a Global Empire from the Ground Up

In the 1990s, Yusuff Ali took a bold step and ventured into the retail sector, launching the first LuLu Hypermarket in Abu Dhabi. The concept of a world-class supermarket offering global products at affordable prices became an instant hit.

What followed was a story of unstoppable growth — today, the LuLu Group International operates in more than 23 countries, employing over 65,000 people. It has more than 250 hypermarkets, shopping malls, food processing plants, and logistics centers spread across the Middle East, Asia, Europe, and the US.

The group’s first retail venture in India — the LuLu International Shopping Mall in Kochi, Kerala — was inaugurated on March 10, 2013, and became an instant landmark.

Recognition, Philanthropy & Influence

M. A. Yusuff Ali’s success is not just measured in numbers but also in the impact he has made on communities. He is known for his extensive philanthropic work, especially during times of crisis. From contributing crores during the Kerala floods to offering free repatriation for stranded Indians during the pandemic, he is widely respected not just as a businessman but as a humanitarian.

His achievements have earned him numerous awards including the Padma Shri (India’s fourth-highest civilian honor), and recognition from the UAE government for promoting business and cultural ties between the two nations.

A True Inspiration for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

Despite his immense wealth and success, Yusuff Ali remains grounded, often visiting his home village in Kerala and supporting local causes. His life story is a reminder that no dream is too big, and with hard work, vision, and humility, anything is possible.

From a small village boy to a global retail mogul, M. A. Yusuff Ali’s journey continues to inspire countless Indians across the world.
