Vamsi Krishna hails from Upper Mandapalle village in Rajampet mandal, Annamayya district, Andhra Pradesh. Losing his father at a young age, Vamsi became the primary support for his family. Despite financial struggles, he nurtured a passion for sports, particularly boxing, Thai boxing, and karate. Life presented him with additional hardships when the catastrophic 2021 Annamayya floods destroyed his home and all his achievements, including medals and certificates.
Beginning of a Sporting Journey
Vamsi started training under Coach Anand Achari at the age of seven. Initially focusing on Thai boxing and karate, he earned recognition in several state and national-level tournaments. Coach Anand offered him free training, recognizing his talent despite the family’s inability to afford professional coaching.
Moving to Hyderabad and Balancing Work
After the floods, Vamsi relocated to Hyderabad to support his mother. He worked tirelessly as a gig worker with Zomato, Swiggy, and Rapido, often working from early morning until midnight. Despite these grueling schedules, he continued training in boxing, refusing to let circumstances derail his dreams.
Achievements and Medals
Vamsi’s dedication began to bear fruit. He won his first gold medal in a Kurnool boxing tournament in 2019, followed by national Thai boxing championships in Gujarat. His hard work culminated in an international Thai boxing title in Goa and a gold medal in an international boxing tournament in Nepal. Today, he holds five certificates in Thai boxing and 12 medals in karate, with aspirations to represent India at the Olympics.
Advocacy and Inspiration
Vamsi believes that government support for financially disadvantaged youth can transform India’s sports landscape. He encourages young people to focus on sports instead of social media or addictions. He has also received support from Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan and Kodur MLA Arava Sridhar for flood-affected families.
A Proud Mother and Coach
Lakshmi Devi, Vamsi’s mother, expressed immense pride in her son’s resilience. Coach Anand Achari emphasized that Vamsi’s talent has made Upper Mandapalle and the entire district proud, highlighting his success in more than 20 state, national, and international tournaments.
Vamsi Krishna’s story is a testament to grit, perseverance, and the power of dreams. From delivering food to standing on international podiums, his journey inspires countless young athletes to believe that nothing is impossible.
