The National Zoological Park in Delhi is set for a major transformation as part of a Rs 400-crore redevelopment project aimed at improving visitor experience, animal welfare, and public awareness. The revamp will introduce modern infrastructure, upgraded animal enclosures, and scientifically designed information boards that will offer visitors in-depth knowledge about wildlife.
Officials said the initiative will change the way people experience the zoo, shifting it from a place of casual sightseeing to a centre for learning, conservation, and awareness.
Smart Signboards to Offer Scientific Animal Information
One of the key highlights of the redevelopment plan is the installation of new, advanced signboards outside animal enclosures. These boards will replace outdated and damaged signage currently in use.
The new displays will provide detailed information on:
●Animal diet and habitat
●Natural behaviour and daily routine
●Conservation status
●Ecological importance
The signboards will be designed in a visitor-friendly format so that children, students, and tourists can easily understand scientific facts about each species.
African Lions to Be Introduced With World-Class Enclosures
As part of the redevelopment, the zoo will soon welcome African lions brought from South Africa. Specially designed enclosures will be developed for them in line with international standards.
Visitors will be able to learn about the lions’ hunting patterns, social behaviour, and life cycle through dedicated information panels installed near the enclosures.
Addressing Loneliness Among Animals
Zoo authorities have also acknowledged that several animals at the facility have been living alone for years. These include a wolf, a great hornbill, a spotted deer, a sand boa snake, a Lady Amherst’s pheasant, and an ostrich.
To improve their mental and physical well-being, the zoo plans to bring suitable companions through animal exchange programmes with other zoos across the country.

Improved Entry, Transport, and Visitor Facilities
The redevelopment plan also includes beautification of the zoo’s entry gates and the introduction of eco-friendly vehicles to transport visitors inside the zoo premises. This will help senior citizens, children, and people with mobility issues access animal enclosures more comfortably.
Zoo to Evolve Into a Conservation and Education Hub
Officials said the goal of the ₹400-crore project is to redefine the role of the Delhi Zoo. Instead of being seen purely as a recreational space, the zoo will be developed as a centre for wildlife conservation, education, and public engagement.
The redevelopment is expected to significantly enhance Delhi Zoo’s national and international standing once completed.
