Olympic champion and India’s golden javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra has added another shining feather to his illustrious career — the rank of Honorary Lieutenant Colonel in the Indian Territorial Army. The honorary rank was conferred upon him by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who hailed Chopra as an “epitome of perseverance and national pride.”
The prestigious ceremony took place in New Delhi, in the presence of Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi and several senior military officials. The 27-year-old athlete, who has long embodied the spirit of discipline and dedication, now officially holds a title that blends his excellence in sports with service to the nation.
“Lt Col (Hony) Neeraj Chopra embodies the highest ideals of discipline, dedication, and national pride,” said Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. “He continues to inspire generations within the sporting fraternity and the Armed Forces alike.”
From Naib Subedar to Lieutenant Colonel — A Journey of True Grit
Neeraj’s journey with the Indian Army began on August 26, 2016, when he joined as a Naib Subedar. His rapid rise through the ranks reflects his hard work both on and off the field — being promoted to Subedar in 2021, Subedar Major in 2022, and now an Honorary Lieutenant Colonel in 2025.
His appointment, approved by President Droupadi Murmu earlier this year, recognizes not just his sporting achievements but also his contribution to India’s global image.

A Decade of Unstoppable Triumphs
Neeraj Chopra made history at the Tokyo Olympics 2020, when he clinched India’s first-ever Olympic gold in athletics — a moment that redefined Indian sports forever. He followed it up with a World Athletics Championship gold in 2023, and a silver medal at the Paris Olympics 2024.
Across the years, his golden arm has dominated the Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, and Diamond League, with his record-breaking 90.23m throw in 2025 now standing as India’s best-ever javelin mark.
A Decorated Athlete and a National Hero
In addition to his new military honour, Neeraj is the recipient of India’s most prestigious awards, including the Padma Shri, Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna, Arjuna Award, and Param Vishisht Seva Medal.
His 2025 performance season alone showcases his consistency:
◆Potchefstroom Invitational, South Africa – 1st (84.52m)
◆Doha Diamond League – 2nd (90.23m)
◆Paris Diamond League – 1st (88.16m)
◆Ostrava Golden Spike – 1st (85.29m)
◆Neeraj Chopra Classic, Bengaluru – 1st (86.18m)
A Symbol of India’s Spirit
Neeraj Chopra’s dual identity — as an athlete who brings global glory and now an honorary Army officer — stands as a symbol of modern India’s courage, discipline, and excellence. His story continues to inspire millions, proving that when passion meets patriotism, the results are golden — both on the field and in service to the nation.
