In a groundbreaking advancement from the National Institute of Technology, Tiruchi (NIT-T), students and alumni have collaboratively invented a device poised to transform water management in rural areas.
The “Tankless Water Controller” (TWC), a novel solution developed by the bright minds of NIT-T’s student team and the esteemed alumni of the 1983 batch, is set to make overhead water tanks a thing of the past in village water supply systems.
Priced affordably at just Rs 5,000, the TWC is designed for quick installation, requiring no more than 30 minutes to set up. Its operation is straightforward yet highly effective; it pumps water on demand whenever villagers turn on their taps.
This on-demand system sidesteps the traditional reliance on storage tanks and borewells, which are not only costly but also necessitate significant effort and time for water retrieval.

One of the device’s standout features is its built-in timer, which allows local authorities to schedule water supply timings, thereby optimizing water distribution and reducing wastage. This capability marks a significant step forward in efficient water management, especially for areas where resources are scarce or access is challenging.
The TWC initiative, named Socially Responsible Innovation™ (SRI) by its creators, directly addresses the urgent need for accessible and efficient water distribution in rural settings. Traditional water supply methods can be prohibitively expensive, with overhead tanks costing upwards of Rs 25 Lakhs and taking years to construct. The TWC, in contrast, offers a swift and cost-effective alternative that can drastically cut down on the financial and labor costs associated with water supply in villages.

The development team comprises dedicated NIT-T students Benament Paul, Jerald Jecinth, Murali Krishna, Raghav Bukkapatnam, and K. Ranjith, alongside alumni Richard Sekar and T. Suresh. Their collective efforts have culminated in a solution that not only alleviates the physical burden on villagers, particularly women, who often traverse long distances to fetch water but also showcases the potential of innovation in tackling social challenges.
