In a heartwarming gesture of solidarity and compassion, Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has come forward to support former teammate Vinod Kambli during his difficult times, fulfilling a promise he made earlier this year.
Through his CHAMPS Foundation—a charitable organization established in 1999 to assist former international athletes in need—Gavaskar has ensured a monthly allowance of Rs 30,000 for Kambli for the rest of his life. Additionally, Rs 30,000 annually will be provided towards Kambli’s medical expenses.
Kambli’s Health Battles
Vinod Kambli, once a promising left-handed batsman who represented India in 17 Tests and 104 ODIs between 1993 and 2000, has faced numerous health challenges in recent years. He underwent two heart surgeries in 2013, financially supported by Sachin Tendulkar, and was hospitalized again in December 2024 due to a urinary infection and cramps. He remained under care in a Thane hospital for nearly two weeks.
Kambli made a rare public appearance during the Ramakant Achrekar memorial event at Mumbai’s Shivaji Park last December, where his visibly frail condition raised concerns. A few weeks later, he was hospitalized, prompting Gavaskar to step forward with a pledge of support.
Gavaskar’s Promise
Speaking to India Today, Gavaskar had shared, “The 1983 team is very conscious of the younger players. For me, they are like grandsons. They are all very concerned, particularly when fortunes desert them.”
He added, “I don’t like the word ‘help.’ What the 1983 team wants to do is take care of him. We want to help Vinod Kambli get back on his feet.”
True to his word, Gavaskar’s initiative through the CHAMPS Foundation has now become a beacon of hope—not only for Kambli, but for many retired sports personalities who have struggled post-retirement.
An Emotional Reunion
Earlier this year, during the 50th-anniversary celebrations of Wankhede Stadium, Kambli met Gavaskar and emotionally touched his feet, showing deep respect. The moment marked the beginning of a renewed support system from India’s cricketing fraternity toward one of its forgotten stars.
Kambli’s life and career were marked by extraordinary highs and unfortunate lows. His early promise, including back-to-back double centuries in Tests, made him one of the brightest stars of Indian cricket. Yet, personal and professional struggles dimmed his presence in the years that followed.
Thanks to Gavaskar’s commitment, Kambli now has a safety net to support his ongoing health needs and daily living expenses.
