In a major push to strengthen urban infrastructure, the Haryana government has approved three major projects worth Rs 123 crore aimed at improving water supply and stormwater drainage in Gurugram.
The projects were cleared during a meeting of the high-powered purchase committee chaired by Nayab Singh Saini.
Officials said the initiatives are expected to address water shortages in several tail-end areas of the city while also strengthening the drainage network ahead of the monsoon season.
22-Km Water Pipeline to Improve Supply
The first project involves laying a 22-kilometre master water supply pipeline with an estimated cost of ₹55 crore.
The pipeline will have a carrying capacity of 200 million litres per day (MLD) and will draw water from the proposed Basai Water Treatment Plant II.
The pipeline will run along the Dwarka Expressway and pass through sectors 101, 104, 108, 110 and 110A, Bajghera Road and Rezangla Chowk before crossing NH-8 and connecting to the Cyber Hub–Sector 16 water supply line.
Areas expected to benefit include Palam Vihar, Sectors 23A, 23 and 22, HSIIDC Sectors 19 and 20, Dundahera, Surya Vihar, and DLF Phase III.
Officials said the pipeline will be integrated with the existing water supply network through multiple connection points, allowing authorities to divert water during maintenance or emergencies.
Upgrade of Basai Water Supply Pipeline
The second project, estimated to cost Rs 51 crore, involves upgrading the main pipeline carrying water from the Basai Water Treatment Plant to the Sector 16 boosting station.
The existing pipeline was designed to carry 170 MLD, but it currently transports nearly 200 MLD, causing leaks and disruptions.
To meet rising demand, the old 1,300 mm pipeline will be replaced with 1,600 mm and 1,800 mm pipelines, increasing the capacity to 311 MLD.
The plan includes:
A 4.3 km pipeline from Basai WTP to Umang Bharadwaj Chowk
A 3.7 km pipeline between Hero Honda Chowk and Rajiv Chowk
An 800 mm pipeline from Rajiv Chowk to the Sector 16 boosting station
Once completed, the project is expected to improve water supply in more than 20 sectors and colonies, including Sector 10A, Sector 37, Civil Lines and Sadar Bazar.
Stormwater Drain to Be Rebuilt
The third project involves rebuilding a 1.4 km stretch of the master stormwater drain (Leg-II) between Ashok Vihar and a railway culvert near Bhimgarh Kheri at a cost of Rs 17.6 crore.
Officials said the existing drain structure has weakened over time and partially collapsed in some sections, reducing its capacity to carry stormwater during heavy rainfall.
Under the new plan, the drain will be rebuilt as a covered reinforced concrete structure capable of handling higher volumes of stormwater.

Boost to City Infrastructure
Authorities believe the combined projects will significantly improve Gurugram’s water distribution system and strengthen flood management infrastructure.
Officials said the projects are expected to enhance water availability in several sectors while also reducing waterlogging problems during the monsoon season. Nh
