In a major push to strengthen sanitation across the city, the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) has initiated the process to hire tractor-trolleys and earthmoving machinery for waste management operations over the next year.
The move comes just weeks before the expiry of current sanitation contracts on March 15, with officials aiming to prevent any disruption in garbage collection and road cleaning services.
Heavy Machinery to Support Waste Lifting
According to civic officials, the hired machines will be deployed along with sanitation workers directly employed by the corporation. These vehicles will primarily handle:
Lifting garbage from public places
Cleaning roads and streets
Removing waste from vacant plots
Supporting large-scale sanitation drives
Zone-wise tenders have already been floated, with an estimated total cost of Rs 6.42 crore. The highest allocation — Rs 2.4 crore — has been earmarked for Zone 3, while other zones will receive proportionate funding based on workload.
Equipment Shortage Behind the Decision
Despite having nearly 4,900 sanitation workers and around 400 vehicles for door-to-door waste collection, MCG faces a serious shortage of mechanised equipment.
Officials revealed that the city currently has only 18 mechanised sweeping machines against a requirement of 42. To bridge the gap, the corporation has proposed purchasing 20 large and four medium sweepers, citing adequate budget availability.
More than 1,400 kilometres of roads in Gurgaon are suitable for mechanised cleaning, making equipment expansion crucial for maintaining hygiene standards.
Ensuring Continuity of Services
Authorities stressed that the hiring exercise is a preventive step to ensure uninterrupted sanitation services after existing contractor agreements end.
Earlier this year, the Haryana urban local bodies department had extended contracts for six manual sweeping agencies until March 31, 2026, at a cost of Rs 127 crore to avoid service gaps.

Cleaner City Goals
With rapid urban growth, rising population and increasing waste generation, Gurgaon’s civic body is under pressure to improve cleanliness and public health standards.
Officials believe that deploying additional machinery will not only enhance efficiency but also help the city move toward more mechanised and systematic waste management — a key requirement for sustainable urban development.
If implemented effectively, the initiative could significantly improve road cleanliness, reduce garbage accumulation and strengthen Gurgaon’s fight against urban pollution.
