Haryana Reserves 33% MBBS Seats, Hospital Beds for Locals in Gurugram Medical College

In a significant policy move aimed at strengthening healthcare access and education for residents, Nayab Singh Saini has directed that 33% of MBBS seats and hospital beds be reserved for Haryana residents at the upcoming Shri Sheetla Mata Devi Medical College and Hospital in Gurugram.
The decision is being seen as a major step toward ensuring that local students and patients are not left behind in a rapidly growing urban healthcare ecosystem.

What the Reservation Means for Students and Patients
The upcoming medical college, being built on over 30 acres in Sector 102A, will offer 150 MBBS seats, of which 33% will be reserved for Haryana students. Similarly, out of 850 hospital beds, a third will be earmarked specifically for residents of the state.
This dual reservation model aims to address two critical challenges:
Limited access to affordable medical education for local students
Increasing pressure on healthcare infrastructure due to Gurugram’s fast-growing population
The government has also directed that fees for reserved seats be aligned with government medical colleges, ensuring affordability and preventing exclusion of middle- and lower-income students.

Healthcare Access Linked to Ayushman Bharat
In a move that strengthens public healthcare delivery, the reserved hospital beds will be integrated with the Ayushman Bharat scheme.
This will allow economically weaker sections to access free or subsidised treatment, expanding the reach of healthcare services to vulnerable populations.
Officials say this integration will ensure that the facility does not become an exclusive private setup but remains accessible to those who need it the most.

PPP Model and Project Progress

The project is being developed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, with a total estimated cost of Rs 679 crore. A significant portion of the funding has already been utilised, indicating that the project is in an advanced stage.
The funding structure includes contributions from:
●Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority
●Municipal Corporation Gurugram
●Shri Mata Mansa Devi Shrine Board
Authorities have set a timeline to complete construction by August 2026, with operational handover expected by October.

More Hospitals Planned as Population Pressure Rises
Recognising the growing healthcare demand in Gurugram, the Chief Minister has also asked officials to prepare proposals for three to four additional hospitals, each with 100–150 beds.
This expansion plan reflects the government’s strategy to future-proof healthcare infrastructure in one of Haryana’s fastest-growing urban centres.

Balancing Growth with Accessibility
Gurugram has emerged as a major corporate and residential hub, but its healthcare infrastructure has often struggled to keep pace with population growth.
This policy signals a shift toward inclusive development, ensuring that:
●Local youth gain access to medical education
●Residents benefit from improved healthcare services
●Public welfare remains central even in PPP-driven projects
The move is expected to create a model where development is not just rapid, but also equitable.
