Haryana’s First Safe School Zone Launched in Gurugram: A Big Step Toward Child Road Safety

In a significant move toward protecting young lives, Haryana has launched its first “Safe School Zone” in Gurugram, marking a major step forward in improving road safety for children.
The initiative, introduced in Kadipur village, is not just an infrastructure upgrade—it represents a shift in how cities prioritize safety, especially for vulnerable groups like school children.
With rising concerns over road accidents across India, this project aims to create a safer, more secure environment for students traveling to and from school every day.

A Serious Problem: Why This Initiative Matters

India continues to face a critical road safety challenge.
On average, 42 children lose their lives daily in road accidents across the country.
In Kadipur, the situation was equally alarming. A survey revealed that nearly 80% of children walked to school, often navigating busy roads without:
●Footpaths
●Safe crossings
●Warning signs
For years, this daily journey posed serious risks.

The Safe School Zone is designed to eliminate these dangers and create a child-friendly mobility environment.

What Has Changed on the Ground
The transformation in Kadipur is visible and impactful.
The newly developed Safe School Zone includes:
● Dedicated child-safe footpaths
● Clearly marked zebra crossings
● Reduced speed limit of 25 km/h
● Safe waiting areas for children
● Awareness-driven wall art and signage
These changes ensure that children can now walk to school without fear, while also encouraging drivers to slow down and remain alert.
The goal is simple but powerful:
Make roads safe enough for children—and they become safe for everyone.

A Collaborative Effort
The project is part of the Gurugram Vision Zero programme, which focuses on eliminating road fatalities through better planning and infrastructure.
It has been implemented by the Rahgiri Foundation in collaboration with the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG).
Support from leading organisations such as Hero MotoCorp, Nagarro, and Hughes Systique has further strengthened the initiative.
This highlights how public-private partnerships can play a crucial role in solving urban challenges.

A Shift in Urban Planning
Officials say the Safe School Zone is more than just a pilot project—it is a new approach to city planning.
Authorities emphasized that roads should not only serve vehicles but also ensure safety for:
●Children
●Pedestrians
●Elderly citizens
The idea is to redesign roads with people-first thinking, rather than vehicle-first planning.

Confidence for Parents, Safety for Children
For parents, this initiative brings a sense of relief.
Earlier, sending children to school meant worrying about traffic hazards. Now, with structured safety measures in place, parents can feel more confident about their children’s daily commute.
Officials also noted that such initiatives help build trust between citizens and administration, showing that public concerns are being addressed proactively.

The Bigger Plan: Expansion Across the City
The Kadipur Safe School Zone is just the beginning.
Authorities have confirmed that this project is part of a larger plan to develop multiple Safe School Zones across Gurugram in the coming months.
If successfully implemented at scale, this model could:
Reduce road accidents significantly
Improve urban mobility
Serve as a template for other cities in India

A Model for the Future
Globally, many cities are adopting “school zone safety” models to protect children. With this initiative, Gurugram joins that movement, setting an example for other Indian cities.
The integration of infrastructure, awareness, and enforcement reflects a holistic approach to road safety.
The launch of Haryana’s first Safe School Zone is a timely and much-needed step toward safer roads.
In a country where road accidents remain a major concern, protecting children must be a top priority.
This initiative proves that with the right planning, collaboration, and intent, even the most dangerous roads can be transformed into safe spaces.
As Gurugram takes this important step, the bigger question now is:

How quickly can this model be replicated across India?
