He Left Big Money Behind to Heal Forgotten Lives—Dr. Ziaur Rahman’s Mission of Hope in Bihar

While most doctors chase careers in plush metro hospitals, Dr. S M Ziaur Rahman made the reverse journey — from a high-paying job in Delhi to a modest clinic in Khagaria, Bihar, where he treats patients for just Rs50.

The turning point? A patient encounter that felt too personal to ignore.

“He was poor, anxious, and had travelled over 1,200 km just to get treatment in Delhi — only to tell me he was from Khagaria, my own district. That shook me,” says Dr. Rahman.

At the time, Dr. Rahman worked in the non-invasive cardiac department of a reputed Delhi hospital. With a promising future ahead, most would have stayed the course. But for him, this encounter was a calling.

“In cities, healthcare is a business. Back home, it’s about survival,” he says.

From White Coats to Ground Reality

Born in an impoverished farmer family in rural Bihar, Dr. Rahman knew struggle firsthand. His father had just five acres of land and three buffaloes — dreams of higher education felt distant. Yet, with grit and support, he pursued medicine, never forgetting his roots.

Today, he runs the National Medicare Hospital & Research Centre in Khagaria, offering affordable healthcare in a region long neglected by mainstream infrastructure.

“People here don’t need five-star hospitals. They need someone who listens, someone who shows up,” he adds.

Consultation Fee: Rs50

Location: Khagaria, Bihar

Services: Cardiac, emergency, general medicine, and more

Patients treated daily: Over 100

Dr. Rahman’s hospital has become a lifeline for rural families who would otherwise spend months saving up to visit distant cities. His effort is more than medical — it’s deeply human.

“I just kept a childhood promise — to serve my village when I became a doctor,” he says with a smile.

The Mission Continues

Dr. Rahman plans to expand his hospital, bring in more specialists, and start awareness campaigns on heart health and hygiene in nearby villages.

His journey is a testament that real heroes don’t wear capes — they wear stethoscopes and walk dusty village roads to save lives.
