Once a jewel of Lutyens’ Delhi, Talkatora Garden is now battling visible neglect, with non-functional fountains, damaged lighting and crumbling heritage structures raising concerns among visitors.
During a recent visit, the garden’s once-iconic central fountains were found dry and inoperative. Locals claimed fountain nozzles had been missing for months, allegedly due to theft and poor monitoring. Dried fountain beds, exposed wiring and broken panels added to the deteriorating appearance.
Heritage Structures in Disrepair
Talkatora Garden, a Mughal-era site dating back to the reign of Emperor Muhammad Shah (1719–1748), holds historical significance. The name originates from Persian words — ‘tal’ (tank) and ‘katora’ (bowl) — referring to the bowl-shaped water reservoir once protected by an embankment (bund).
However, the embankment wall has partially collapsed and remains covered with temporary green mesh. Plaster is peeling off from arched gateways and heritage walls, exposing bricks beneath. Visitors said the site, once a favourite spring destination for families and walkers, now appears poorly maintained.
Garden staff said the restoration of heritage portions falls under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), while NDMC is responsible for general maintenance. According to staff, the bund wall caved in during last year’s monsoon.
NDMC Claims Restoration Underway
Responding to concerns, NDMC officials stated that restoration and upgradation works are in progress. Fountain nozzles are being reinstalled, and lighting systems are being upgraded to ensure safety and compliance.
Officials also said all 226 lights across the garden are operational and that ASI is handling repairs to the collapsed bund wall to preserve the site’s heritage character.

A Garden in Transition
While authorities claim corrective measures are underway, regular visitors feel urgent intervention is needed to restore the garden’s former glory.
For a space that blends natural beauty with historical significance — and once hosted one of the 18th century’s key battles — Talkatora Garden remains an important cultural landmark. The coming months will determine whether restoration efforts can truly revive its fading charm.
