As the world races toward cleaner and more reliable energy sources, nuclear power continues to play a pivotal role in reducing carbon emissions and ensuring long-term energy security. According to data from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the world’s nuclear power generation capacity reached new heights as of June 2025, led by the United States, France, and China.

U.S. Leads with 97 GW — World’s Largest Nuclear Powerhouse

The United States tops the global nuclear power chart with a net capacity of 97 gigawatts (GW) from 94 reactors, showcasing its unmatched investment in nuclear infrastructure. Despite being a mature player in the field, America continues to modernize its fleet for greater efficiency and safety.

France — The Nuclear Heart of Europe
Close behind, France stands as Europe’s nuclear stronghold with 63 GW from 57 reactors. Over 70% of France’s electricity comes from nuclear energy, making it one of the greenest industrialized nations in terms of carbon output per kilowatt-hour.

China Rising Fast with 55 GW
With 55 GW generated from 57 reactors, China is the fastest-growing nuclear power nation. It’s investing heavily in next-generation reactors and aims to surpass France by 2030. China’s nuclear expansion is key to its goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2060.

India and Japan Among Top Producers
India contributes 8 GW from 21 reactors, with several more under construction, signaling its intent to strengthen nuclear’s role in the nation’s energy mix. Japan, recovering from the Fukushima setback, now operates 13 GW across 14 reactors, highlighting its cautious but steady return to nuclear power.

Global Snapshot
Other major contributors include Russia (27 GW), South Korea (26 GW), Canada (13 GW), and Ukraine (13 GW). The rest of the world combines for 18 GW, with smaller but significant contributions from countries like Sweden, Finland, and Belgium.

As global demand for clean and stable energy rises, nuclear power remains central to the world’s transition away from fossil fuels — balancing sustainability with reliability.
