India Launches First-Ever Green Steel: 98% Recycled, 100% Fossil-Free

India has taken a bold step toward sustainable construction and climate-conscious manufacturing with the launch of its first green steel and fossil-free TMT bars, produced using nearly 100% recycled content and powered entirely by renewable energy.

This milestone marks a major shift in the country’s carbon-intensive steel industry, which is often regarded as one of the largest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions.

 What Makes This Steel ‘Green’?

  • 98% Recycled Steel:
The green TMT bars are made from scrap metal, reducing the need for mining virgin ore.
  • Zero Fossil Fuels:
No coal or natural gas is used during production—completely eliminating fossil fuel dependency.
  • 100% Renewable Energy:
The entire manufacturing process is powered by solar, hydro, or wind energy sources.
  • Lower Emissions:
The process cuts carbon emissions by up to 70% compared to traditional steelmaking.

A New Era for Construction and Infrastructure

These sustainable TMT bars are not just a green novelty—they meet all IS 1786 standards and are suitable for critical infrastructure, including bridges, highways, high-rise buildings, and industrial structures.

Builders, architects, and engineers now have access to environment-friendly alternatives without compromising on strength, ductility, or quality.

Why It Matters for India

India is currently the second-largest steel producer in the world. But with that scale comes environmental impact. Traditional steelmaking accounts for 6–9% of global CO₂ emissions.

This innovation supports India’s commitment to:

  • Achieving Net Zero by 2070.
  • Promoting a circular economy.
  • Building climate-resilient infrastructure.
  • Attracting green financing and ESG-aligned investments.

The breakthrough was made possible by a collaboration between private sector steel manufacturers and renewable energy providers under the guidance of sustainability and metallurgy experts.

This sets a model for other industrial sectors to decarbonize and shift toward clean energy sources while remaining competitive.
