In a historic move to modernize and streamline India’s mail delivery system, the Department of Posts (DoP) has announced that Registered Post will be officially merged with Speed Post from September 1, 2025.
The transition marks the end of one of India Post’s oldest and most trusted services, widely known for its reliability in secure communication. The decision, revealed in an internal circular dated July 2, is set to enhance efficiency, simplify operations, and offer improved customer convenience through a unified, tech-enabled delivery platform.
“This initiative aims to streamline mail services, enhance operational efficiency, improve tracking mechanisms, and deliver greater customer convenience,” the DoP stated.
What Changes for Customers?
Faster Delivery: Registered Post, known for its security, will now adopt the speed and digital tracking capabilities of Speed Post.
Better Tracking: The merger will eliminate duplication and allow for a single, improved tracking system.
More Seamless Experience: Customers will no longer need to choose between speed and security—Speed Post will now do both.
The DoP has directed all divisions to update SOPs, training modules, manuals, and workflows, replacing references to ‘Registered Post’ with ‘Speed Post’.
A Shift Toward Digital-First Delivery
This move comes as part of India Post’s larger vision to modernize traditional services, increase transparency, and adopt more address-specific and time-bound logistics systems.
While Registered Post was ideal for critical documents, such as legal notices or sensitive personal communication, it was also slower and less technologically integrated. Speed Post, in contrast, already offers real-time tracking, quicker delivery, and wider reach.
Final Compliance by All Departments
The DoP has urged all administrative units to ensure all amendments and technical shifts are completed well in advance of the September 1 rollout.
