Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate India’s first-ever nature-themed airport terminal at the Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati on Friday, marking a major milestone in Assam’s infrastructure and aviation development. The inauguration will take place during the Prime Minister’s two-day visit to the state.
Built at an estimated cost of Rs 4,000 crore, the newly constructed terminal is the largest airport terminal in Northeast India, spread over a vast area and nearly seven times bigger than the existing facility. The ambitious project is expected to significantly enhance regional connectivity, promote tourism, and accelerate economic growth across Assam and the entire Northeast.
Inspired by Assam’s Natural Heritage
Designed under the unique ‘Bamboo Orchids’ theme, the terminal is inspired by Assam’s rich natural and cultural identity. Its architecture draws elements from Kopou Phool (Assam’s iconic orchid), bamboo forests, the mighty Brahmaputra River, and world-famous landmarks such as Kaziranga National Park and Majuli island. The design reflects a harmonious blend of sustainability, tradition, and modernity, making it India’s first airport terminal built entirely around a nature-based concept.

World-Class Capacity and Technology
Once fully operational, the terminal is projected to handle 13.1 million passengers annually by 2032, with the capability to manage 34 air traffic movements per hour, the highest in the Northeast region. The terminal places strong emphasis on passenger comfort and advanced technology.
Key features include:
◆DigiYatra biometric entry gates
◆AI-driven airport operations
◆Automated baggage handling systems
◆Advanced Instrument Landing System (ILS)
◆Upgraded runway and airfield infrastructure
These upgrades aim to ensure faster processing, enhanced safety, and a seamless travel experience.
Boost to Tourism and Regional Growth
The new terminal is expected to play a transformative role in positioning Guwahati as a major aviation hub for the Northeast, improving access to remote states and attracting domestic as well as international tourists. It aligns with the Centre’s broader vision of ‘Act East’ and strengthening infrastructure in strategically important regions.
With its eco-inspired design, cutting-edge technology, and massive capacity expansion, the Guwahati airport’s new terminal stands as a symbol of modern India’s growth rooted in nature and culture.
