In a major leap towards making affordable healthcare accessible to every Indian, the Modi Government’s flagship scheme, Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP), has successfully established 16,912 Jan Aushadhi Kendras (JAKs) across the country as of June 30, 2025. The ambitious target? A whopping 25,000 Kendras by March 2027.
These Jan Aushadhi Kendras provide high-quality generic medicines at affordable prices, ensuring substantial savings for citizens and a significant reduction in out-of-pocket healthcare expenditure.
A Basket of Affordable Care
Under the scheme, 2,110 medicines and 315 surgicals, medical consumables, and devices are available—covering critical therapeutic areas including cardiovascular, anti-diabetic, anti-cancer, gastrointestinal, anti-infectives, and more. Nearly all medicines from the National List of Essential Medicines (except vaccines and lab reagents) are part of the Jan Aushadhi product basket.
Robust Supply Chain Ensures Stock & Reach
A centralized, IT-enabled supply chain powers the initiative, with 1 central warehouse, 4 regional hubs, and 39 distributors. Fast-moving medicines are closely tracked, and a stocking mandate for 200 essential medicines helps maintain uninterrupted availability while offering incentives to store owners.
Massive Savings for Citizens
The scheme has delivered an estimated Rs 38,000 crore in savings to Indian households over the last 11 years. As per National Health Accounts, the average household health expenditure has dipped sharply from 62.6% in FY 2014-15 to 39.4% in FY 2021-22, thanks in large part to Jan Aushadhi Kendras.
Empowering Entrepreneurs, Expanding Reach
The government has adopted a franchisee-like model, encouraging applications from NGOs, individuals, companies, and other organizations to open JAKs in every corner of the country—including remote blocks and tehsils. Applications can be submitted online at janaushadhi.gov.in.
Uttar Pradesh Leads the Way
Among the states, Uttar Pradesh tops the list with 3,550 Kendras, followed by Kerala (1,629), Karnataka (1,480), and Tamil Nadu (1,432).
