In a landmark step for India’s technology ecosystem, IIT Hyderabad has developed an indigenous Internet of Things (IoT) chipset designed to transform sectors ranging from healthcare and logistics to national security. Compact, energy-efficient, and low-cost, this new chipset marks a major stride towards a sovereign, self-reliant India in advanced semiconductor innovation.

A Breakthrough in System-on-Chip Technology
The newly developed chipset is a System-on-a-Chip (SoC) — an integrated circuit that combines most or all the essential components of a computer or electronic system onto a single microchip. Its design extends ultra-reliable connectivity to virtually any corner of the globe, running for years without a single battery replacement.

The technology is expected to dramatically cut costs for IoT deployment while enabling faster rollouts of smart infrastructure and real-time data systems across India.

Impact Across Key Sectors

IIT Hyderabad officials said the chipset’s applications could redefine how India handles critical operations in:

Healthcare – Remote monitoring, telemedicine, and advanced diagnostics.

Logistics – Real-time tracking of shipments, supply chain optimization, and predictive maintenance.

National Security – Secure surveillance systems, border monitoring, and disaster management support.

By reducing dependence on imported technologies, the project also aligns with ‘Make in India’ and ‘Digital India’ initiatives, boosting the domestic semiconductor ecosystem.

Call to Government Agencies
“Importantly, central and state agencies are encouraged to leverage this technology early and adopt it for the public good, accelerating its impact across governance and citizen services,” IIT Hyderabad said in a statement.

The institute underscored the chipset’s role in building a citizen-centric digital infrastructure, enabling smart cities, efficient energy management, and next-generation e-governance solutions.

Driving a Self-Reliant Future
With this innovation, IIT Hyderabad is positioning India to lead in IoT and semiconductor design, setting global standards for low-power, long-range connectivity solutions. Experts believe the chipset will not only revolutionize India’s technology landscape but also open export opportunities, making India a hub for IoT innovation.
