New Delhi, May 7 – In a strategic initiative to enhance emergency response capabilities, Civil Defence organisations across India conducted a nationwide mock drill on May 7. The large-scale exercise, held in coordination with state disaster management authorities, focused on simulating real-life disaster scenarios such as earthquakes, industrial accidents, chemical leaks, and fire outbreaks.
The mock drill aimed to evaluate the readiness of civil defence personnel, first responders, district authorities, and community volunteers in responding to multiple types of emergencies. It also served as a public awareness campaign, educating citizens on how to act swiftly and safely during disasters.
Objectives and Scope
The coordinated simulation was conducted in both urban and rural regions and involved various stakeholders, including:
- NDRF, SDRF, Fire Services, Police, Medical Teams, and NGOs
- School and college students, who participated in evacuation drills
- Hospitals, which tested emergency patient handling protocols
- Industries, especially chemical and manufacturing plants, which tested containment and evacuation strategies
The Ministry of Home Affairs, through the Directorate General of Civil Defence, monitored the drills and reviewed response times, coordination levels, and community participation. These insights will contribute to refining India’s disaster response strategies.
Strengthening Local Resilience
Officials emphasized that such drills are critical to building community resilience and reducing disaster impact. India, being prone to natural and man-made disasters, places increasing emphasis on public preparedness and inter-agency coordination.
