In a major crackdown on consumer fraud, Delhi Police’s Crime Branch has arrested a 40-year-old man for allegedly tampering with expired food and cosmetic products and selling them in the market as fresh stock.
The accused, identified as Omprakash Sharma, was apprehended following a raid at a godown in Jagatpur’s Pushta Road area. Acting on specific intelligence inputs, police uncovered what they described as a systematic operation involving alteration of expiry dates and repackaging of daily-use products.
Popular Brands Seized
During the raid, officers seized a large quantity of expired items from well-known brands, including Nestlé Sugar Free, Glucon-D, Dabur Gulabari, Clean & Clear Face Wash, Vicks VapoRub, Odomos, Savlon Antiseptic and Dabur Chyawanprash.
According to investigators, the accused allegedly removed or chemically erased original expiry dates and batch numbers. Fresh manufacturing and expiry labels were then reprinted and affixed before the products were repacked and prepared for resale.
Police also recovered printing frames, labelling materials and equipment used to alter packaging details.
Serious Health Risks
Officials warned that such activities not only cheat consumers financially but also pose serious health hazards, particularly in the case of nutritional supplements, antiseptics and medicinal products.
“Expired goods, especially consumables and healthcare products, can cause severe health complications,” an officer said.
Supply Chain Under Scanner
Police said further investigation is underway to trace the source of the expired stock, identify suppliers and distributors, and uncover the full supply chain network behind the operation.
The case highlights growing concerns over counterfeit and rebranded goods entering retail markets, underscoring the need for stricter monitoring and consumer vigilance.
Authorities have urged buyers to carefully check packaging details, manufacturing dates and authenticity before purchasing daily-use products.
