The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has issued new rules for Aadhaar enrollment and updates for the 2025–26 assessment year, aiming to improve transparency and eliminate duplicate Aadhaar numbers.
One Aadhaar, One Person
In a major step to strengthen identity security, UIDAI has announced that no individual can hold more than one Aadhaar number. If someone has multiple Aadhaar numbers, only the first Aadhaar with biometrics will remain valid—the rest will be automatically cancelled.
New Document List Issued
UIDAI has also released an updated list of documents for enrollment and data correction, applicable to:
Indian citizens
Overseas Citizens of India (OCI)
Children above 5 years
Long-Term Visa (LTV) holders
Foreign nationals
Documents Accepted Include:
Valid Indian Passport (accepted as ID, Address, Relationship & Date of Birth proof)
PAN Card
Voter ID
Ration Card
Driving Licence
Pensioner Photo ID
Bank Passbook
Government-issued certificates
Special Rules for Foreign Citizens & OCI
For OCI holders, LTV holders, citizens of Nepal, Bhutan, and other foreign nationals:
Valid foreign passports
Visa documents
Residential permits (issued by FRRO)
OCI cards or citizenship certificates
What If You Need to Update Aadhaar Info?
In case of name, gender, or birth date changes, extra documents like:
Gazette notifications
Medical certificates
Birth certificates
Self-declarations
are required for the update process.
