No Air Pollution Hotspots Found in NDMC Zone, Major Clean-Air Tech Push Shows Results

The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has reported a significant achievement in the fight against air pollution, stating that no air pollution hotspots have been identified within its jurisdiction. The finding comes from a recent Action Taken Report, highlighting the effectiveness of sustained clean-air initiatives and strict enforcement measures in some of the most sensitive and high-traffic areas of the national capital.
The NDMC zone includes major arterial roads, diplomatic enclaves, government offices, commercial districts, and residential areas, making pollution control particularly challenging. Despite this, authorities say a combination of technology-driven interventions and continuous monitoring has helped maintain better air quality levels.

Technology-Driven Pollution Control at the Core
According to officials, NDMC has adopted a multi-pronged clean-air strategy to tackle dust, vehicular emissions, and construction-related pollution. Mechanical street sweeping plays a key role, with four sweepers operating daily in two shifts, covering nearly 230 kilometres of roads. The silt collected during sweeping is scientifically disposed of at the Okhla waste processing facility to prevent re-suspension of dust.
To further strengthen operations, NDMC is in the process of procuring five new CNG-operated mechanical sweepers at an estimated cost of Rs 3.7 crore. These machines are expected to be deployed soon, adding to the existing capacity.

Anti-Smog Guns and Mist Sprays Reduce Dust Levels
NDMC has also deployed nine anti-smog guns, including one static unit and eight mobile units. These machines spray fine water mist to suppress dust particles and are capable of covering up to 340 kilometres daily.
In addition, mist spray systems have been installed on 77 electric poles along prominent roads such as Lodhi Road and Shanti Path. The council plans a major expansion of this system, aiming to install mist sprayers on 1,323 poles across 29.5 kilometres of road network.

Green Cover and Strict Enforcement Add Support
Greening efforts have played a critical supporting role. NDMC reports that green cover in its area now exceeds 47 percent, with millions of shrubs, saplings, and plants added under national clean-air and urban greening programmes.
To ensure compliance, additional inspection teams have been deployed to monitor construction sites, road dust control measures, and waste handling practices. Authorities have also stepped up recycling of construction and demolition waste to prevent illegal dumping.

Model for Urban Pollution Control
Officials say the absence of pollution hotspots reflects consistent implementation rather than short-term action. NDMC believes the approach can serve as a model for other civic bodies in Delhi, particularly in managing dust pollution and maintaining air quality in dense urban zones.
The council has reiterated that sustained monitoring and technology-backed enforcement will continue to keep air pollution under control in the heart of the capital.
