“No Gas, No Food, No Work: Daily Wagers Forced to Leave NCR”

Across Noida, Greater Noida and Gurugram, a quiet but serious crisis is unfolding.
As LPG shortages intensify and prices spiral out of control, thousands of daily wage workers are being forced to make a difficult choice—stay in the city and struggle, or return to their villages to survive. What started as a temporary disruption in early March has now turned into a full-scale livelihood crisis affecting the most vulnerable workforce in NCR.

Cooking Turns Into a Daily Battle
For most migrant workers, access to affordable cooking fuel was never guaranteed, but it was manageable through informal supply systems. That fragile system has now collapsed.
With crackdowns on illegal refilling networks and disruptions in supply chains, LPG prices in the black market have surged dramatically. Workers who once managed refills at minimal costs are now facing prices that are several times higher. For someone earning around ₹10,000–₹12,000 a month, even a single cylinder has become unaffordable.
The impact is immediate and harsh—workers are skipping meals, cutting down on food, and struggling to manage rent and basic expenses at the same time.

Global Tensions, Local Impact
The crisis has been intensified by global developments. Rising tensions involving Iran, United States and Israel have disrupted energy supply chains, indirectly affecting LPG availability in India.
At the same time, stricter monitoring and closure of illegal supply channels have removed the only affordable option available to many low-income workers. The result is a supply crunch that has hit the bottom of the economic pyramid the hardest.

Workers Begin Leaving NCR
With survival becoming difficult, many workers have started leaving NCR. Contractors and local sources indicate that a significant portion of the workforce has already returned to districts such as Badaun, Aligarh, Etah and Shahjahanpur.
For many, the decision is simple—if food and fuel cannot be managed in the city, it is better to go back home, even if it means losing their job. The exodus picked up pace after the beginning of April, when workers collected their salaries and chose to leave rather than continue in uncertain conditions.

Even Food Outside Is No Longer Affordable
The impact of the LPG crisis is not limited to household cooking. Roadside eateries and small food vendors have also raised prices due to higher fuel costs.
Meals that were once affordable for daily wage earners are now beyond reach. Eating out, which used to act as a backup during tough days, is no longer a viable option. For many workers, this has translated into fewer meals and, in some cases, going to sleep hungry.

Those Who Stay Face Even Tougher Conditions
While many workers have left, those who remain in NCR are facing even greater challenges.
Families with children, stable jobs, or long-term commitments cannot easily migrate. They are now dealing with rising expenses, delayed gas supplies, and increasing financial pressure. Many are borrowing money or delaying rent payments just to manage daily survival.
For these workers, the crisis is not just about fuel—it is about sustaining life in an increasingly expensive environment.

A Return to Basic Survival Methods
With LPG becoming inaccessible, many households have been forced to return to traditional cooking methods such as wood-fired chulhas.
This shift highlights the severity of the crisis. In urban NCR, where modern infrastructure defines daily life, workers are being pushed back to basic survival practices due to lack of affordable fuel.

Work and Survival No Longer Aligned
The crisis has also disrupted daily work routines. Workers are spending hours in queues for gas cylinders, often before or after long shifts. Missing work can mean salary cuts or even job loss, but not arranging fuel means no food at home.
This constant balancing act between employment and survival is adding to the stress faced by thousands of workers across NCR.

A Warning Signal for NCR’s Economy
Beyond individual struggles, the LPG crisis is sending a broader economic signal. NCR’s industrial and construction sectors rely heavily on migrant labour.
If the current trend continues, labour shortages could impact productivity, slow down projects, and disrupt the informal economy. What appears to be a fuel crisis today could soon translate into a wider economic challenge.

The unfolding LPG crisis has exposed a deep vulnerability in NCR’s growth model.
The cities depend on a workforce that lives on the edge, without financial buffers or social security. When basic necessities like cooking fuel become unaffordable, the entire system begins to strain.
If timely intervention does not happen, the consequences may extend far beyond migrant workers—impacting industries, urban stability, and the broader economy itself.
