In a remarkable story of grit and perseverance, Vishnu Munda, a young man from a small village near Tamar in Ranchi district, has cracked the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) exam with Rank 282, despite being born with one hand and facing years of struggle.
Raised in a humble home where his father farms for household needs and his mother battles epilepsy, Vishnu’s early education took place in local government schools. He later graduated in Chemistry from Kisan College, Bundu, before moving to Hazaribagh for higher studies and coaching.
Turning Obstacles Into Opportunities
Initially preparing for railway exams, Vishnu switched focus to civil services after advice from a teacher. His first JPSC attempt faltered due to a poorly chosen optional subject, but he persisted. Through discipline, 5 a.m. study sessions, and 8–10 hours of preparation during exam season, he rebuilt his strategy and cleared the exam on his second attempt — eight years after graduation.
Family Sacrifices and Quiet Support
His father’s steady resolve, siblings’ encouragement, and friends’ belief in his work ethic formed his backbone. Even with one hand, Vishnu never sought concessions, writing exams like everyone else. “Dedication, discipline and honesty are the three pillars without which no student can succeed,” he says.
A Message for Aspirants
Vishnu believes his success is a signal to rural youth that background is no barrier. He urges aspirants to follow a strict timetable, take mock tests seriously, and approach studies with honesty rather than shortcuts.
His story is already inspiring many in Bundu–Tamar, where five youngsters have cleared JPSC this year. “Talent exists everywhere,” he says, “but without guidance and coaching it gets lost.”
