When you first see Avani Lekhara, it’s not her wheelchair that captures your attention; it’s her warm, radiant smile and the confidence she exudes. Despite reaching unprecedented heights at the Paralympics, Avani carries herself with a natural modesty that complements her incredible achievements. At just 22 years old, she has made history as the first Indian to win back-to-back gold medals at the Paralympics, yet she remains grounded and focused on her future.

A true champion

Avani’s journey to becoming a Paralympic champion is nothing short of inspiring. At the age of 11, a car accident left her paralyzed from the waist down. Despite this life-changing challenge, Avani has risen above her circumstances with remarkable strength. Her recent triumph in the women’s 10m air rifle (SH1) competition in Chateauroux, where she defended her title from the Tokyo Games, is a testament to her skill and perseverance.

But the path to the Paris Games wasn’t smooth. Earlier this year, Avani faced a significant hurdle: a gallbladder surgery in March. “I had to take a break from training, and it mentally affected me because I was away from the range during a crucial time,” she explained. The surgery, though minor, affected her core muscles, which are vital for her shooting performance. Avani and her team worked tirelessly to help her recover and regain her strength.

Rising from the ashes

Despite the setbacks, Avani’s determination never faltered. She returned to intense training, working hard to get back in shape. “I lost some weight after the surgery, but I was determined to overcome these challenges,” she said. Her commitment was evident during the national camp at the Karni Singh ranges, where she pushed herself to prepare for the upcoming Games.

Avani’s efforts culminated in a thrilling victory at the Paralympics. In a tightly contested final, she shot an impressive 249.7, surpassing her own Paralympic record of 249.6 set in Tokyo in 2021. Her performance not only secured the gold but also ensured that India achieved its first double podium finish in the same event at the Paralympic Games. Korea’s Lee Yunri won silver with a score of 246.8, while Avani’s compatriot Mona took bronze with a score of 228.7.

Focus and determination

This achievement made Avani the second Indian, after javelin thrower Devendra Jhajharia, to win two gold medals at the Paralympics. Unlike Jhajharia, who won his medals across different Games, Avani’s victories came in back-to-back Paralympics, marking a remarkable feat in Indian sports history.

As she looks ahead, Avani remains focused on her goals. “I have four more matches to go, and I’m going to give my best in all of them,” she said with unwavering determination. Her journey is far from over, and she is poised to continue making her mark on the world stage.

Avani Lekhara’s story is a powerful reminder of resilience and determination. Her achievements go beyond the medals she’s won; they inspire countless individuals to persevere in the face of adversity. Avani not only represents the spirit of a true athlete but also serves as a beacon of hope and strength for all.
