On the eve of India’s 79th Independence Day, President Droupadi Murmu delivered a stirring address to the nation, weaving together a tribute to the sacrifices of freedom fighters, a celebration of India’s rapid progress, and a vision for a developed and self-reliant nation by 2047.
Speaking from the President’s Secretariat under the banner of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, the President hailed India as the “Mother of Democracy”, recalling its ancient republican traditions and the nation’s seamless transition to universal adult franchise post-1947. She underscored the four constitutional pillars — justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity — with human dignity at their heart.
Remembering the Past, Building the Future
President Murmu paid homage to the heroes of the freedom struggle and acknowledged the pain of Partition, observed today as Vibhajan Vibhishika Smriti Diwas. She urged citizens to draw strength from history while remaining united in the face of challenges.
Highlighting India’s transformation, she noted a 6.5% GDP growth rate, resilience in the global economic slowdown, and rapid poverty reduction. Infrastructure milestones — from the expansion of National Highways and metro networks to the historic rail link in the Kashmir Valley — were celebrated as symbols of progress.
Technology, Self-Reliance, and Inclusivity
The President spotlighted India’s leadership in digital payments, the India-AI Mission, and the drive toward Atmanirbhar Bharat. She praised the Jal Jeevan Mission, Ayushman Bharat’s expanded healthcare coverage, and welfare measures that have reduced inequality and empowered the vulnerable.
She identified youth, women, and historically marginalised communities as the driving forces for India’s next leap forward. Citing achievements in sports, space exploration, and entrepreneurship, she expressed confidence in India’s ascent as a global powerhouse.
Defence, Environment, and National Unity
Recalling Operation Sindoor as a decisive blow against terrorism and a testament to India’s indigenous defence capabilities, President Murmu lauded the armed forces for their resolve. She also called on citizens to combat climate change through sustainable habits, aiming to leave behind a flourishing planet for future generations.
A Shared Vision
With gratitude to soldiers, police forces, civil servants, the judiciary, and the Indian diaspora, the President concluded with a rallying cry:
“We will not be the aggressor, but we will not hesitate to retaliate in defence of our citizens… Let us march ahead together towards a Viksit Bharat.”
