In a rare recognition of civilian excellence in national security operations, IRTS officer J Sanjay Kumar has received the Chief of the Army Staff’s Commendation for his outstanding role in Operation Sindoor, a high-priority military mission that demanded lightning-fast logistics.
Serving as Senior Divisional Operations Manager (Coaching) in Jhansi Division, Sanjay Kumar coordinated the movement of critical ammunition from the Central Ammunition Depot (Pulgaon, Maharashtra). Thanks to his leadership and his team’s precision, an entire rake was placed, loaded, and dispatched within 24 hours of the Army’s request — a feat the Army Chief hailed as a “new benchmark in civil-military cooperation.”

Civil–Military Synergy at Work
Operation Sindoor showcased how Indian Railways can respond to the nation’s call. General Upendra Dwivedi, in a letter dated 14 August 2025, praised the speed and professionalism with which rail resources were mobilised, citing Sanjay Kumar’s role as pivotal to the mission’s success. Jhansi’s historic railway division, with its proximity to major cantonments, proved a strategic hub under his watch.
“This Award Is Special Because We Did Something for the Nation”
Speaking to Indian Masterminds, Sanjay Kumar said, “I am glad to share that I have received a letter of appreciation from the Chief of the Indian Army for my contribution to Operation Sindoor. In the end, the credit belongs to the team.”
He personally monitored train movements, coordinated multiple departments, and ensured nothing slowed the mission. “I feel proud that I had the opportunity to do something directly for national security,” he added.

The Green Warrior of Indian Railways
Beyond high-pressure operations, Sanjay Kumar is known as Indian Railways’ “Green Warrior.”
◆He has planted 22,000+ trees on vacant railway land.
◆Launched “Gift a Tree” and “Plant 5 on Your Birthday” campaigns.
◆Transformed 150 railway stations by planting native species and improving biodiversity.
His environmental efforts are now considered a model for sustainable railway development.
