India has once again taken the global lead in fintech innovation. In a groundbreaking move, Razorpay, in collaboration with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and OpenAI, has launched ‘Agentic Payments’ — a first-of-its-kind system that allows users to shop, chat, and pay directly within ChatGPT.
This pilot project represents a major milestone in India’s digital commerce evolution, transforming how users interact with AI assistants and make online payments. With Agentic Payments, conversational commerce is stepping into a new era where transactions are not just digital, but intelligent, personalized, and effortless.
Developed in partnership with Axis Bank and Airtel Payments Bank, the new framework is built on advanced UPI features such as UPI Circle and UPI Reserve Pay. These ensure that AI agents can process payments securely in real time, while maintaining user consent and privacy.

BigBasket, a Tata Group company, has become one of the first merchants to integrate the feature. Now, users can simply type, “Help me order ingredients for a Thai-style vegetable curry,” and ChatGPT’s AI will find products, compare prices, and complete the payment seamlessly through Razorpay’s UPI integration — all without leaving the chat.
Razorpay CEO Harshil Mathur called this a “transformational step” in Indian payments.
“Agentic Payments empower AI assistants to act as true purchasing agents. For the first time, users can discover, decide, and pay securely within one conversational flow.”
NPCI’s Executive Director Sohini Rajola added,
“By combining UPI’s trusted infrastructure with AI intelligence, we’re creating a payment experience that’s inclusive, secure, and futuristic.”
OpenAI’s Oliver Jay echoed similar enthusiasm, noting that India’s UPI ecosystem provides a “perfect testbed for intelligent, secure AI-driven transactions.”
With this innovation, India has set a global benchmark in AI-powered payments, merging UPI efficiency with AI intelligence — a leap that positions the nation at the forefront of the next generation of digital commerce.
