Shwetha Menon Becomes First Woman President of AMMA, Says ‘No One Should Be Penalised Unless Proven Guilty’

Actor Shwetha Menon has scripted history by becoming the first woman president of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA), marking a turning point for one of Kerala’s most powerful film bodies. Her election, alongside Kukku Parameswaran as the first woman general secretary, comes at a critical time when the industry is still reeling from sexual harassment allegations, resignations, and internal turmoil.

A Historic Win Amidst Crisis
For decades, AMMA has been dominated by male leadership, with superstar Mohanlal serving as its last president. But following the explosive release of the Justice Hema Committee report in 2024, which detailed widespread discrimination and harassment faced by women in the Malayalam film industry, the entire executive committee was dissolved.

Against this turbulent backdrop, Menon’s victory is being seen as a watershed moment for women in Malayalam cinema.

‘Hema Committee Didn’t Criticise AMMA’
Speaking exclusively after her win, Menon was careful in her remarks on the Hema Committee’s findings. “I don’t think the committee criticised AMMA directly. The report highlighted systemic issues in the industry at large,” she said, adding that her focus will be on ensuring fair representation and dignity for all artistes.

She also stressed that due process must be upheld when dealing with allegations: “No one should be penalised unless proven guilty. Justice must be fair to both sides.”

What Lies Ahead for AMMA
Menon has outlined rebuilding trust, supporting women artistes, and ensuring accountability as her immediate priorities. Industry insiders believe her leadership could mark the beginning of cultural reform within AMMA, which has faced criticism for its handling of harassment complaints in the past.

For many, her election is not just symbolic but a signal of change in an industry long accused of silencing women’s voices. With Menon at the helm, expectations are high that AMMA will finally take meaningful steps to address issues of gender equality, workplace safety, and professional respect in Malayalam cinema.
