In a big boost for coastal transport and tourism, Maharashtra is set to launch South Asia’s fastest Roll-On, Roll-Off (Ro-Ro) ferry service between Mumbai and the Konkan coast starting September 1, 2025. The high-speed ferry, operated by M2M Ferries, promises to revolutionise travel to Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg, cutting down road travel times by more than half.
Travel Time Slashed
Mumbai to Jaigad (Ratnagiri): Just 3 hours (vs 10–12 hours by road)
Mumbai to Vijaydurg (Sindhudurg): 5 hours (vs 12+ hours by road)
The vessel can carry 50 cars, 30 two-wheelers, minibuses, and hundreds of passengers, making it a game-changer for families, tourists, and locals heading home during peak festive seasons like Ganeshotsav and Holi.
Fare Structure
Passengers: Economy Rs 2,500 | First Class Rs 9,000
Vehicles: Cars Rs 6,000 | Two-wheelers Rs 1,000 | Bicycles Rs 600
This pricing ensures flexibility for both short trips and extended stays in the Konkan region.
All Permissions Cleared
Fisheries & Port Development Minister Nitesh Rane confirmed that “all 147 permissions have been secured with world-class safety standards.” He added that the ferry will significantly ease congestion on the Mumbai-Goa highway, notorious for traffic jams during festive travel.
Expansion Plans Ahead
Building on the success of the Mumbai-Mandwa (Alibaug) Ro-Ro, which has already become popular with weekend travellers, the state now plans:
New routes to Shrivardhan and Mandwa
A direct Mumbai–Goa high-speed ferry link in the near future
A Game-Changer for Konkan
For Konkan residents, the ferry is more than just transport—it’s a long-awaited boost to connectivity, tourism, and trade. With faster and smoother access to Mumbai, the region is expected to see a surge in economic activity and tourism along Maharashtra’s stunning coastline.
As excitement builds, the inaugural journey on September 1 is set to mark a historic leap in coastal travel for Maharashtra.
