Gurugram’s Sultanpur National Park has once again transformed into a vibrant sanctuary as migratory birds from Europe, Siberia, and Central Asia arrive to escape the harsh winter conditions of their native regions. With winter at its peak, the park is echoing with cheerful bird calls, creating a captivating natural spectacle for visitors.

Located just 50 kilometres from the national capital, the compact yet enchanting park has emerged as one of the most popular winter destinations for bird lovers, nature enthusiasts, and wildlife photographers.

Thousands of birds find refuge
Every year, as water bodies in colder regions freeze, thousands of birds travel long distances to reach Sultanpur, which offers a warm climate, abundant food, and safe nesting areas. This season, the park is hosting more than 15,000 migratory birds, making it a thriving habitat for avian diversity.

Among the notable visitors are Siberian Cranes, Greater Flamingos, Northern Pintails, Black-headed Ibises, and Greylag Geese. Their striking colours, graceful movements, and melodic calls have added life and energy to the wetlands.

A blend of migratory and native species
Alongside migratory birds, Sultanpur National Park is also home to several resident bird species that can be seen throughout the year. Birds such as the Indian Roller, Purple Sunbird, Black Francolin, and Painted Stork continue to draw attention, especially during early mornings and afternoons.

The coexistence of migratory and native birds creates a rare and delightful experience for visitors, offering opportunities to observe diverse species in a single location.

An ideal spot for birdwatchers and photographers
The park has been thoughtfully developed to enhance visitor experience. A ground-level walking trail runs along the lake, allowing tourists to explore the park closely while remaining immersed in nature.

There are four watchtowers positioned at strategic points, offering panoramic views of the wetlands and distant bird activity. From these elevated spots, visitors can enjoy cool winter breezes, shimmering water reflections, and uninterrupted views of birds in flight.

Nature’s calm amid city life
Despite being close to an urban hub like Gurugram, Sultanpur National Park offers a peaceful escape from city life. The serene environment, combined with the rhythmic sounds of birds and gentle winds, provides a calming experience for visitors.

Seasonal attraction draws crowds
With winter bird migration at its peak, footfall at the park has increased significantly. Experts advise visitors to arrive early in the morning for the best sightings and photography opportunities.

As migratory birds continue to arrive, Sultanpur National Park remains a symbol of ecological balance and natural beauty, reminding visitors of the importance of preserving wetlands and wildlife habitats.
