The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has launched a fresh push urging parents and guardians to complete the Mandatory Biometric Update (MBU) for their children aged 5 to 7 years. The update is completely free of cost within this age window and is essential for uninterrupted access to Aadhaar-linked services.
Why the Biometric Update Is Crucial
When a child is enrolled for Aadhaar below the age of 5, only demographic details and a photo are recorded. Fingerprints and iris scans are not taken at that stage due to biometric immaturity.
But as per UIDAI norms, biometric updates become mandatory once the child turns five. This is known as the first Mandatory Biometric Update (MBU). If done before the age of 7, it is free. If delayed beyond that age, a nominal fee of Rs. 100 is charged.
Aadhaar Without Update Could Be Deactivated
UIDAI has started sending SMS alerts to mobile numbers registered with Aadhaar, reminding parents to complete the biometric update. Failure to comply after the age of 7 may lead to Aadhaar deactivation, which can impact access to essential services.
Seamless Access to School, Scholarships & Government Schemes
Updated Aadhaar helps children avail key services such as:
School admissions
Entrance exam registrations
Scholarships
Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) schemes
UIDAI emphasized that Aadhaar with updated biometrics ensures better service delivery and a smoother digital identity experience for children.
Where to Update
Parents can visit any nearby Aadhaar Seva Kendra or designated enrolment centre to complete the MBU process.
