New Delhi – In a groundbreaking achievement, Lt. Commander Divya Sharma has become the first woman flying instructor in the history of the Indian Navy, shattering long-standing gender barriers in one of the most elite domains of military aviation.
Commissioned into the Navy’s aviation arm, Lt. Commander Sharma has completed rigorous training to qualify as a flying instructor—a role critical to training naval aviators for frontline operations. This marks a significant milestone for gender inclusion in India’s armed forces, especially in traditionally male-dominated branches like naval aviation.
Having previously operated fixed-wing aircraft, she has now been certified to train pilots at the Indian Naval Air Squadrons. Her achievement underscores the growing footprint of women officers in pivotal roles in India’s defense services.
“Her accomplishment is a moment of pride for the Navy and a strong message of empowerment and equality,” said a senior naval spokesperson.
Her journey serves as an inspiration for young women across the country aspiring to serve in combat and aviation roles, reaffirming the Indian Navy’s commitment to diversity and operational excellence.
